It's a big day for India, as music maestro A.R. Rahman has become the first Indian composer to scoop an Oscar for his music in Slumdog Millionaire.
This is the first time that an Indian has won more than one nomination in Oscar history and also the first time an Indian music director has won the prestigious award.
Having won the Golden Globe and the BAFTA, the Oscars represented the final lap in Slumdog's race for recognition. Hot on the heels of his BAFTA success, Rahman was nominated in the Best Original Score and the Best Original Song categories for the Oscars.
The other nominations in the Best Original Score category were Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), James Newton Howard (Defiance), Danny Elfman (Milk) and Thomas Newman (WALL-E).
Anticipating the award, Rahman had said that if he wins the award, it would be a "great honour" and would help him "do bigger things".
Well now that he has brought home the coveted trophy, it's a dream come true not only for the music maestro but also for billions of people back home, who've been waiting eagerly for Rahman to get the award.
